    Samuel Ranta-Eskola was kind enough to send along a copy of his final thesis paper for you to check out. In it he describes the techniques used to develop his 3D engine. Here's a much better description from the author:

    " As the final thesis in my education I wrote a BSP-tree engine with physics, radiosity and network optimization. My work has been documented in a the attached file. It can be viewed as a tutorial on how to build your first BSP-engine, I describe a couple of techniques and give algorithms on how to implement them. "

    Core Magazine is reporting that Sega plans to develop a new game API for Palm devices. Here's a snippet from their news article:

    " Sega has announced plans to partner with Motorola to develop a game application programming interface (API) for Palm OS devices. The game API will be integrated into future versions of Metrowerks' CodeWarrior development tools for the Palm OS platform, providing developers with a powerful toolset for creating next-generation Palm Powered games. In addition, Sega plans to directly license the game API to developers. "

    " gleem (OpenGL Extremely Easy-to-Use Manipulators) is a small, self-contained library of 3D widgets which are easy to incorporate into an arbitrary OpenGL application. The library has been ported to the Java programming language from C++ using Jausoft's OpenGL for Java. "

    The Nebula Device web site has been updated with a number of new downloads, links, and extensions for the engine. The source code can now be downloaded as a tarball, updated daily.

    The Nebula Device is a free, 3D game engine by Radon Labs, complete with source code.

    Jaap Suter announced a new release of the SGADE, "a collection of generic code for the Gameboy Advance." Here's the buzz:

    " Version 0.99 is completely stable, and all features work on Gameboy Advance hardware now. There have been some architectural and design chances, and loads of cleaning up. We have new features like easy DMA transfers, flash memory (SRAM) handling and loads more. There is a full SGADE reference and documentation available, which should get you up and running in no time. I've also written some tutorials, which should make it as easy as possible to start coding something. Finally, I've started a mailing list for all things SGADE related. "

    NVidia posted an updated version of the NvTriStrip Library, "a library for vertex cache aware stripification of geometry." According to the site, "This update fixes bugs with list generation, fixes some crash bugs, and reduces the number of degenerate triangles generated.

    The Crystal Space site has been updated with a new project called Borax. According to the site, "This is not a game as such but a template on which someone else can build a game. It contains code for things that almost all games will need and thus provides an easy way to jumpstart a Crystal Space game or project." Crystal Space is a free 3D game engine written in C++.

    Game-research.com, a recently-launched site "dedicated to the art, business, and science of computer games", sent along the following bit of information:

    " Game-Research.com attempts to bring together knowledge on computer games from the areas of art, business, and science. Traditionally such cross-communication has been sparse to the detriment of all involved. The site grew out of a Danish site called autofire.dk and work on a book about children and computer games."

    The site provides short introductions to important areas and provides access to a database of links and references to literature. This database is kept up-to-date with the help of users at site, who are strongly encouraged to submit references. "

    GarageGames announced today the release of the Torque Game Engine for Mac. Here's a clip from the press release:

    " EUGENE, OREGON - January 30, 2002 - GarageGames announces the release of the Apple Macintosh version of the popular Torque Game Engine. This release gives independent Mac game developers the same cross platform technology previously available only to Windows based developers, while opening the Mac market up to PC game makers.

    GarageGames, a pioneering on-line game publisher at www.garagegames.com provides services such as a game developer job marketplace and a game making resource portal. However, it is best known for its historic agreement to sell and license the technology engine powering Sierra’s Tribes 2 to independent game makers. The agreement allows GarageGames to get the source code into the hands of game makers around the world - providing them with an on-line marketplace to sell their titles, and giving them a chance to get their products published in the traditional “box retail” channel. "

According to the author, "there are still some chapters to be written but the 9 first will take the reader all the way from the design of the language, writing the grammar and up to emitting the compiled program as symbolic assembly using a custom instruction set for a stack based VM."

    Lev Povalahev sent word that he's released a new Extension Loading Library for OpenGL, complete with source code. Here's a description direct from the author:

    " I've written a lib for automatically loading extensions and full OpenGL 1.3 and 1.2 functionality, it simplifies the process of initializing extensions down to 1 function. I support almost all new NVIDIA extensions, all ARB extension, most used EXT extensions, and I'm adding support for new ATI extensions now. Provided with full source code and a precompiled lib for MS Visual C++ 6. "
