Phil Frisbie, Jr. sent word that version 1.42 of HawkNL has been released, a game-oriented network library that's available under the LGPL.
In addition, Phil announced a new release (0.8) of HawkVoiceDI, "a fully functional library for those developers that already have networking code in their application, and just need help to create voice packets to send/receive."

The AI-Depot posted a new essay entitled "The Future of Game AI: Intelligent Agents", written by Alex J. Champandard. Here's a clip from the introduction:
" With the increasing commotion about the importance of Artificial Intelligence in games, there is little doubt that it will be a key component of best-sellers in the near future. However, the manner in which this innovative Artificial Intelligence will be incorporated into current game frameworks is not so clear. Indeed, as you may expect, the wide variety of AI solutions available implies many possible approaches, ranging from game logic that learns to intelligent environments, including autonomous intelligent agents... All these techniques are justifiable, and in fact they often accompany each other. This essay looks into one of them: intelligent agents. "

The finalists in the 4th annual Independent Games Festival have been announced. Here's a clip from the press release:
" SAN FRANCISCO, CA -December 11, 2001 - CMP Media's Gama Network announced the finalists in the fourth annual Independent Games Festival (IGF). The 10 finalists were selected by a panel of game industry professionals from an internationally and stylistically diverse pool of applicants. These games will now compete for the $15,000 Seumas McNally Grand Prize and awards for technical excellence, game design, visual art, and audio. The chosen development teams will exhibit their games at the Game Developers Conference, March 19 - 23, 2002 in San Jose, Calif. "

Eric Grange announced an update to GLScene, an open-source, OpenGL-based library for Delphi. According to the author, GLScene now features "a generic mirror component, based on the stenciling technique outlined by Mark J. Kilgard, but with twists to allow correct rendering in a complex scene (mirror area ZBuffer clearing and mirror plane clipping)."
