X3D, an open file format for 3D content and effects, announced a new proposal amendment which adds support for shading languages. Here's the buzz:

"X3D is a powerful and extensible open file format and scene graph standard for 3D visual effects, behavioral modeling and interaction (the successor to VRML, but more stable, higher throughput, and XML enabled for network services). The new Amendment 1 adds support for Vertex and Fragment Shaders with bindings to the OpenGL Shading Language, HLSL, and Cg. It also add the CAD Distillation Format for CAD publishing and file interchange. The X3D Binary format was also released. This enables a unique combination of fast, secure communication of 3D data for a wide variety of visualization and web-service applications - while using an open ISO standard. "
