OpenGL 2.0 Proposal

    Discuss This! sent along the following news about an OpenGL revision effort headed by 3DLabs:

" 3Dlabs is leading the effort to create the first major revision to OpenGL. At the September ARB meeting 3DLabs committed to developing a series of white papers - each one describing goals for enhancing the OpenGL API in a particular area. They wrote drafts of each of the white papers, circulated them for input from interested OpenGL parties - IHVs, ISVs, and research organizations - and generated first version white papers. They will continue to gather input and plan to update the white papers in time for the December ARB meeting. The white papers will become the basis for the OpenGL 2.0 specification which they hope to have ready in the spring of 2002. The primary goals for OpenGL 2.0 are to add support for pixel and fragment shaders, improve memory management and give applications more control over the rendering pipeline. This will still provide compatibility with OpenGL 1.3 - so older applications will run on graphics accelerators with OpenGL 2.0 drivers. "
