Kenneth Russell sent along the following news bit:

" The Java[tm] Development Kit, version 1.4, and the New I/O package contain a platform-, vendor-, and Java virtual machine (JVM) implementation-independent mechanism for safely accessing memory that is not managed by the JVM. This zero-copy mechanism can accelerate programs in many domains while reducing the amount of native code.

A simple terrain engine built using Jausoft's OpenGL for Java and the New I/O facilities illustrates the use of the technique in the 3D graphics domain. "
