SPEAKERS ANNOUNCED FOR CMP MEDIA'S GAME DEVELOPERS CONFERENCE 
16th Annual Event to Feature Industry Heavyweights from Game Development, 
Academia, Entertainment


SAN FRANCISCO - Jan. 24, 2002 - Organizers of the 16th annual Game Developers 
Conference (GDC) have announced more than 300 speakers from leading game 
development and entertainment properties worldwide to present lectures 
and discuss the current state of game creation.

The world's largest event exclusively devoted to game developers, attracting 
over 10,000 attendees annually, the conference is scheduled for March 19 
- 23 at the San Jose Convention Center in San Jose, Calif.

"Game development has no borders.  The GDC has gathered industry leaders 
from Japan, Europe and the U.S., all intent on producing and making better 
games, to exchange ideas and techniques on how to push the art to its limits," 
said Alan Yu, director, Game Developers Conference.  "With the continuing 
cross-pollination between cultures and disciplines at the GDC, we're all 
certain to see refreshing and exciting innovations at this year's event."

Key speakers include:

	Tetsuya Mizuguchi, creator of "Space Channel 5," formerly at Sega Enterprises 
and now head of United Game Artists, covering the union of music and interactivity 
in "Rez: The Synesthesia that Games Invite"

	Shin'ichi Okamoto, CTO and vice president, Sony Computer Entertainment, 
credited with the development and launch of the original PlayStation and 
PlayStation 2, discussing "Sony Computer Entertainment Research and Development"

	Mark Cerny, founder, Cerny Games, with credits from "Marble Madness," 
"Crash Bandicoot" and "Jak and Daxter," lecturing on "What Worked: 10 Detailed 
Examples of Successful Character Action Design"

 	Will Wright, co-founder, Maxis, the driving force behind "Sim City," 
and Scott McCloud, comic book artist and author, in a discussion titled: 
"When Maps Collide"
	
	Kazunori Yamauchi, president, Polyphony Digital, producer of the hit racing 
title and franchise "Gran Turismo," discussing "Advancing a Franchise Through 
Design"

	Paul Debevec, lead graphics researcher, University of Southern California, 
the recipient of ACM SIGGRAPH's first "Significant New Researcher Award" 
for his creative and innovative work in the field of image-based modelling 
and rendering, lecturing on "High Dynamic Range Imagery and Image-Based 
Lighting"

	Toshihiro Nagoshi, president, Amusement Vision, whose credits include 
"Super Monkey Ball" and "Daytona USA 2001," discussing "The Evolution of 
Level Design and the Relationship Between Background and Interface Design 
Procedures"

	Greg Omi, senior developer, Naughty Dog, with 20 years of industry experience 
covering the Atari Lynx, 3DO multiplayer, M2 and MX hardware systems and 
numerous titles, including "Crash Bandicoot," speaking on "Maximizing DMA 
Bandwidth on the PlayStation2"

	Iain McCaig, artistic director and concept designer, behind "Star Wars: 
Episode I: The Phantom Menace" and "Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the 
Clones,"
	"Terminator II" and "Bram Stroker's Dracula," leading "The Return of 1001 
Nightmares: A Character Design Workshop"

	Nick Walker, senior animator, PDI/Dreamworks, with credits from the animated 
feature film "Shrek," discussing "The Making of Shrek"

      	Neil Young, vice president and production executive, Electronic 
Arts, the driving force behind "Majestic" and who helped launch "Ultima 
Online," speaking on                                              	"Episodic 
Entertainment: Viva La Evolution!"

	Elan Lee, project manager and lead designer behind "AI" the game, and 
Jordan Weisman, creator of "Mage Knight," founder of Wizkids and member 
of the Game Manufacturers Association Hall of Fame, presenting "This is 
Not a Game: A Discussion on the Creation of the AI Web Experience"

	Masaya Matsuura, game designer, NanaOn-sha, discussing "PaRappa 2, Vib-Ribbon 
2: Conflicts and Problems in Creating Sequels"

	Yoot Saito, game designer/CEO, Vivarium Inc., discussing "Seaman: The 
Case for Eccentric Title Making"

	Richard Garfield, game designer, Wizards of the Coast and creator of "Magic: 
The Gathering," covering "Games with Collectible Components"

	Thomas Engel, founder, Factor 5, discussing "Afterthoughts: The Audio 
of Rogue Leader"

	Shuhei Yoshida, vice president of product development, Sony Computer Entertainment 
America, who helped orchestrate the creation of the Sony PlayStation, discussing 
"Next Generation Console Development and Production in the Global Market: 
Opportunities and Challenges"
