Just wanted to send you guys this image. Its 4 screen shots of a R&D project and will eventually turn into a not yet announced game for the XBOX. The engine uses vertex and pixel shaders to do bump mapping, diffuse and specularity lighting. And has a portal system to do the geometry and light culling. The color of the lights seems to differ from each screen shot because the lights are flickering. Since it is an R&D project, all the art was either made by me (yay for programmer art) or taken from the web. The level was created in 3DS Max. My next step is to create shadows using vertex shaders.

As far as the graphics and generic code is concerned, yes, PC's and X-Box's are similar but that's where the similarites end. The sound system will need to be recoded. The input system will need to be recoded and perhaps redesigned (now have a keyboard and mouse to support as well as all the directx input devices such as joysticks and joypads). Oh, I take back the similarities with graphics programming because now you have to enumerate devices and have fall-back plans for your visual effects if the hardware doesn't support it. Plus now you have to extend your user interface to define controls and add graphics tuning (do you want bilinear or trilinear texture filtering; which resolution do you want; texture quality etc etc etc).

Plus there loads of other stuff: piracy protection (its less transparent on a PC), file handling, memory management. Perhaps even different optimisations. The list can get very long...

Come on, that's not true. How about Diablo, Diablo II, Quake 3, Unreal tournament, Black & White. They're all about gameplay.

You miss the point. The whole thing is about not being based on facts. Maybe the XBox has more power and maybe it is more easy to develop for but who cares? It's not a trick - it's a Sony :). BTW: The best games are not GTA3 and MGS but GT3 and Jak&Dexter IMHO.

I haven't played any of these but IMO Q3 is a tech demo and nothing more.
