Image Description, by James Fingleton

This IOTD shows my engine (The FingleTron Engine) at work running my small version of Star Wars Episode 1’s pod racer game. The ‘game’ allows the player to control the pod using the mouse. It has sound (just the engines at the moment) and pretty accurate collision detection (polygon-polygon), which isn’t quite perfect yet. You can have a bit of a joyride around a track I knocked up. The pod racer itself was created by a friend of mine. The landscape is just a flat plane with various mountans and rocks, but the engine is not supposed to be a landscape engine.

The engine features loading of .3ds files (thanks to all who those in the forums at flipcode who helped me on this recently), OpenGL rendering, polygon perfect collision detection where filtering is done on the scene to speed things up, full scene hierarchy, object hierarchies, full 3d position sound (achieved through FMOD) and sky domes.

My VERY temporary web site where you can download the game is :

A friend of mine is currently in the process of building me a much much better website that will contain a lot more information about the engine, the games I will create with it, and hopefully projects other people will create using the engine.

textbook example of why one should NOT smoke crack and operate machinery at the same time :)

Very Funny...Give me a break.

He said "The landscape is just a flat plane with various mountans and rocks, but the engine is not supposed to be a landscape engine.". I just want to know what it is gonna be used for.

Goddam you rock Warren....

MC BAXTON - ha ha ha ha ha

Now please keep your mouth shut...

You really want us to debug code asm mode...without any source code...
hmm - yeah right...

What's wrong with smoking sugar?

So will you make a racer? How do you collision detection?

July 06, 2001, 11:47 AM

looks nice, but it crashes really fast ....

Woohoo, first post... =)
Been lurking around here a lot.. and felt like contributing something.

I would look in to the collision detection code...
especially to the step 2 of CD..
It seems that when the bounding boxes overlap it crashes...

Otherwise look's nice...

and.. my first mistake it seems...
forgot to check the post with nickname option... =)

and disregard my comment about the step2...

was not thinking clearly... =)

Babar: "You really want us to debug code asm mode...without any source code... hmm - yeah right..."

Aaahhhh those were the old days... JCAB and me, armed with pencil, paper, and Z80 mnemonic-hex table, breaking Manic Miner's code apart. You youngsters don't have any respect.

I tried making it crash on my system, but it plays really smooth and nice! I have a 750 athlon with a voodoo 3500 on a win2k platform.
I even tried slamming into the giant rocks, and it doesn't crash.

Hmmm....the above comments seem like I want to crash while everyone else wants to play it, hehe.

It doesn't crash for me :( fix that ASAP :) Oh yeah kind of weird how if you do a full barrel roll you keep rotating really fast.

Amen, brother.

Looks good on this end. Works fine on my AMD/900 with Diamond Stealth III S540 on Win2K. The shadow below the pod cycles/jumps between about 5 shades of gray, which is a little distracting, but other than that it looks good.

Being a 2D guy I'm curious about the possibilities in 3D. Does the pod have to be so static? i.e. can you transform/manipulate the 3D model between frames so it looks a little more dynamic? (I'm asking because I don't know if updating models like this in 3D destroy the frame rate.)

Another crack smoker. :)

Crashes for me on my Duron 700/TNT 2. Usually within 2 seconds if I move forward. Moving backwards I can leave the track, but if I go forward again, as soon as I get back on the track, BOOM! err CRASH!

July 06, 2001, 10:49 PM

No, it appears that he is smoking something much, much more potent.

July 07, 2001, 05:21 AM

Crashes for me, but racing around the empty area is cool. (Win98)

I have a theory, it doesn't crash under win2k but I can't check and not many people have said what windows they use.
Anyone with win2k find it crashes? or with win98 find it not crash?

July 07, 2001, 05:25 AM

Crashes on a Celeron 500 MHz (256 MB RAM) with G-Force 2 MX 32 MB running Windows 2000.

July 07, 2001, 08:48 AM

Crashes on my P500, 64K, Voodoo 3, WinME.

Here's an idea, why not post a demo with collision detection switched off? That way you'll be able to see if that really is the culprit ...

July 07, 2001, 11:23 AM

I have Windows ME, 1000 Mhz Althon, 128 MB RAM, 16 mb video card.

It crashes within a few seconds of me moving. It crashes anywhere, not just when I run into stuff.

I could imagine there being some invisible things you are running into.

July 07, 2001, 06:45 PM

FWIW, crashes on my system too
768MB Athlon 900
GeForce II GTS 32MB

Only crashes if I get too close to objects. If I stay away it runs great. Nice work.

naah... just being awake for a LONG time... smoking cigarettes.. drinking coke and coding...
