Image Description, by Brebion flavien

These are screenshots from my 3d MMORPG engine. They were taken on a P2-400 with a GeForce. I tried to show a few interesting effects, such as true volumetric clouds and detail objects (grass) on the ground. The performance is rather low due to many factors: no LOD (this will be my next big task), true 3d meshes for everything (including the landscape), on-the-fly computed soft shadows (look the mountains and the house; the sun can be moved), and mostly, everything is dynamic (vertex buffers are refilled every time). The application is CPU limited.

The sky and grass are animated. I tried to not abuse of the lensflare effect, which can be disabled by users anyway. There is also the usual stuff (particles, 3d sound, procedural terrain textures, detail textures, collision detection, frustum culling, 3ds importer, shaders, state groups, etc..). I am sorry for the poor quality of the models/colors/textures used -i'm definately not an artist-.

I am seeking a job in the game industry in France. If you are interested, or know someone that could be, feel free to drop me a mail. I'll release a public demo in a few days.

Thanks,

F. Brebion

Hey, sorry for the delay, had to fix a few things.

You'll find the demo ( plus new screenshots ) here:

http://perso.club-internet.fr/brebionf/patch01b.htm

If you see any problem, send me a mail to describe the problem, your system configuration, and the logs/log_file.txt if possible. If there are visual artifacts, you can also take a screenshot with the F12 key and send it ( please, convert it to JPG before ).
Thanks,

F. Brebion

crashes for me.

i get sound starting up and an empty window but thats it

the only error in the log was this:

Updating character position.
l5_enobject.c:EN_OBJ_create_from_model_name:model not found on disk or DB.
Can't create a zone's object.
Average face area for object 1: 255

other than that, the log gets to the main loop and then crashes.

machine:
celeron 400, voodoo 5, 384MB ram, windows 98

Do you actually get a crash, or just an empty window? In the second case don't panic, it takes a few minutes ( generally 3 to 4 ) to make the shadows calculations before displaying the first screen. Also, don't switch of window, DirectInput don't like it :) Working on some fixes.
Thanks,

it crashes with an illegal operation after the window has been open for about 30 seconds.

Well it is running alright now. I d/l'd the nVidia 12.00 drivers.
Its very hard on the frame rate but that would probably be from the fact I only have a TNT2
=)

Looks very nice and definitely would play it in a MMORPG.

One slight problem I do have is you haven't put a cap on the view.
The player can move 180 degrees up and down (ie. A full loop)
Very unusual the first time you run around the demo upside down
=)
