Image Description, by Julien Houllier

You can download and try current version of my OpenGL 3D engine, called KoolEngine v1.4.
  • I've coded a mini-raytracer for lightmaps calculation, but this one is not perfect, as you can see between some surfaces.
  • Collision is not perfect, but runs well.
  • There is many improvements that can be done on KoolEngine, and every suggestion is welcome...8-)

    Try pressing F1 key to see stats.

    You can download this demo on my website : http://point.free.fr in the folder "PROJECTS"

    SeeU...and enjoy KoolEngine !

    It could use some light. Up the gamma or use lighter textures.

    I think maybe some people misunderstood my tone. It's great to see other peoples' work on this site. But there are just TOO MANY people that are implementing the same exact engine. That is perfectly okay for a learning experience, but then they should try to move onto something more creative and try to develop new techniques for doing things. If we don't, we are soon going to be seeing that all games look exactly the same (as they already do somewhat.. thanks to hardware acceleration.. maybe pixelshaders will fix this).

    So, my apologies to Julien. I realize that it takes a lot of effort to put something like this together. But, at the same time, I am not too keen on seeing EVERYONE'S attempt at a spiffy 3D engine. Try to focus on a specific feature instead and submit that as the IOTD.

    Sorry for the late post !

    And, first : THANKS TO EVERYBODY

    To answer everyone, unsorted:

    - It is precalculed raytraced lightmaps. I have coded my own raytracer, just for this lightmaps. It runs like ( I think ) every raytracer:

    for (each poly)
    for(each light)
    for (each lightmap-texel)
    DoesTheRay(Light to lightmap-texel) is intercepted ?
    yes : the lightmap-texel is not updated
    no : the lightmap-texel is updated with lightcolor

    - No, It is not another demo just for glory. It is a pre-build of my engine. It is not ready for game-support. But, I am currently working on the TCP/IP, and I think I will release another demo with multi-viewers.

    - English version for my website ? Yes, think it's a great idea, but as you can see, my english is fairly poor.

    - Euh, oui...oh, yes, this is a OLDY-skydome based on hemisphere. Not matter about that at this time. I will, of course, put a cube instead of the hemisphere and let it centered every frame...

    I will re-post another picture in the IOTD when things will be updated

    Thanks again.

    Does it looks so dark ?
    I'm afraid...
    Can you send me screenshots ? tell me about your 3D Adapter..

    I'have only tested that on TNT2(32MB) and GeForce2GTS/Ultra(32MB-64MB), and a shitty 3DBlaster Exxtreme(8MB). This last one render the scene, but not the lightmaps...

    In answer to Vorteks:
    The object in the center of the screenshot is a house with reflections on it. It cames from the actual version of the engine, not public ( soon, soon 8-) )...

    I also want to answer again Hikey :
    You can run KoolEngine without having a multitexture-capable card. KoolEngine just optimize the code for your hardware, like vertex arrays or MMX pipeline.

    Nice pic, every image I see reminds me I should be getting back into graphics.

    On an off topic point, kurt is there a backend page to flipcode (like a headlines.xml (see http://www.cfxweb.net/backend.php it doesn;t show the source in IE, try netscape or mozilla) which I can use instead of parsing the front page html in my infobot.

    Thanks
