Image Description, by William Garrison

This is a capture from "Node" a demo created by myself and "Tronster" (, then submitted to the COMA2 demo competition. (

This shot is part of the ending scene and was generated using my GeoGL library, which is a simple library for drawing and managing objects in 3D space. The image in the corner is slightly later in the demo, and is the only use I've ever had for 1D textures. :) The source code for GeoGL and to our demo are available at

You can see the other entries to COMA2 at

So, according to you, a IOTD submitter have to make something "better" than this for you to say that you like it?

This is NOT a competition...
This is NOT a who-can-code-the-best-hi-tech-engine place...
This is NOT about pretty graphics.

This is a place for us coders/developers to check out what others are doing and helping eachother by giving constructive criticism.

I personally love to check out what other coders are doing,
no mather what it is and i also understand the amount of work required to create something like this.

Grow up!

Look! Scroll upwards! Do you see an image? You do? Remember it?

Well here's a novel idea, shall we talk about it? I know, crazy idea, but it just might work..

January 12, 2001, 09:25 AM

Well, I would have liked it better if it had a red dot in it.

January 12, 2001, 09:25 AM

I think this IOTD is great. I haven't seen too many demos with this
theme, so I give him an 'A' for effort and an 'A' for originality.

You know, pretty soon people are gonna stop posting their work here
out of fear that people will attack their credibility as a
programmer with cheap and pointless comments about how their image sucks,
with no real or valid explanation why. That, IMO, is the only thing
that SUCKS about the IOTD.

January 12, 2001, 09:32 AM

> I haven't seen too many demos with this theme

Which means you haven't seen too many demos, period.
Almost 15 demos a year have been made with this theme, since, let's say.... 1990 ..?
(Jeskola for example)

So let's make it a 'D' for originality.

About the effort : It *wuold* be an 'A' if he *had* made the effort of scanning in the texture at a proper resolution :)
So shall we call it a 'B' ..?

Oh shit. I can't believe it's happening.

What an annoying thing be forced to read dozens of totally stupid and pointless postings. For a day like 12-31-2000 it's OK, but daily???

It is clear that some people are trying to destroy the recognized, beloved quality of not only this forum but Flipcode in general.

Kids, PLEASE stop flooding. There are mature fellows present, and we are not interested in your opinions. Shut up! Grow up!

I don't think Mr. Baxton is the only one, and IMO a providence MUST be taken immediately and in a severe way. Things are going really bad here and I'm just starting to read other forums because I can't keep myself reading these (excuse-me) fucking idiot silly comments.

I am not advocate of censuring, but I think that for now EVERY posting should be read by a moderator BEFORE appearing in the forum, until things establish nice again.

I am definitely not so close to Kurt to be a moderator, but if no one can spend a little time EVERY DAY AND POST to filter the childish AND unrelated (yes, annoying repetitive comments going outside the main issue) postings, I am a voluntary. I am busy but I want IOTD returning to what it used to be. GREAT, INTELLIGENT AND FUNNY.

Kurt, Phantom, Herz, Champandard, Hodorowicz, Stokes, DP, Carlisle, Suter, Tim, someone, please, please, PLEASE, - P L E A S E - do something. Filter, kick, ban, KILL :), anything.

Long live to Flipcode.

I agree completely with Vender N, this is getting stupid. I'll see if I can get in touch with Kurt and persuade him to maybe moderate this area for a while?

I quite appreciate seeing what everyone comes up with, coding in isolation is a depressing experience sometimes.

Guys, please please please consider when you post here if its on topic at all?

If its not, then dont post.

And before I contradict myself too much, I have seen a few demo's in my time :)), and I remember a few intel inside kinda things, if youve ever been to a european demo party with any amiga demo coders, you will see at least one "intel inside" parody amongst the entries :))

But anyway, its all a good learning experience, and thats all it needs to be.

January 12, 2001, 11:43 AM

I actually did not want to post anything into this thread anymore, because I posted already too much off-topic stuff here and feel a bit responsible for how the whole discussion turned out to be... :(

But after reading this

"I am not advocate of censuring, but I think that for now EVERY posting should be read by a moderator BEFORE appearing in the forum, until things establish nice again."

I just wanted to say : KURT PLEASE DON'T DO THIS. This would make the things worse in my opinion, that would be the death to the whole message board. There are always people like MC BAXTON on each forum, no matter where it is. This kind of censorship is NOT the way to go.

January 12, 2001, 11:56 AM

Let me just clear this up.

MC_BAXTON, please explain your definition of images sucking. And, please do it without offnding people personally, just offending the IOTD that sucks.

Give the criteria about why you say it sucks. And also, please list what you LIKE about the technology demonstrated in the current image. The image isn't by itself, it is not a painting that is going to be sold for a million dollars. It shows an example of something. So tell us honestly what you think of the technology and the work that went into it.

I think if you clarify your comments, you might redeem yourself.
If, on the other hand, you want to appear as a total jerk, you can just reply with "I don't care." :-)

PS: And, to all of you out there, disregard people who give "that sucks" comments. If that is the major focus of their response to you, then they are not being professional, not even to mention courteous to you. First, get some honest courteous opinion, once you think something is good enough, then you can listen to all the others. Everyone's a critic ;-)

January 12, 2001, 11:58 AM

first IOTD I see that reaches 100 posts :) Very nice.

January 12, 2001, 11:59 AM

Vander :
>and we are not interested in your opinions

Then why would you read messages in a forum ?
What good would it be if you're not interested in someone else's opinion ?

> EVERY posting should be read by a moderator BEFORE appearing in the forum

Yeah, that's a good way to kill a forum. If it's not instant, people won't bother to check back again.

The fact there's such a lively posting today just shows people actually visit this site - frequently too, that is :)
I couldn't care less about the 100 msg's - I can filter the interesting ones out within a minute.

I like people showing their stuff, getting (constructive) criticism etc... But you can find me ROFL when BlindSheep's surrounded by idiots again :)
It's not all about being a good coder and a nice boy - fun's important too :)

January 12, 2001, 12:03 PM

I feel exactly the same way too and I wanted to post something very similar, but I think I'll just shut up from now on and learn my exams as I should...

See ya until a month or so! ;)

January 12, 2001, 12:03 PM

January 12, 2001, 12:04 PM

I dare to post my opinion - err, sorry for 'the next post today' !
First, I think if the 'kick, bann' thingie comes here IOTD will become simple (almost) non-realtime (almost) irc channel...
The problem is obvious - flame wars exists only in the virtual space, because some people need to talk (not metter what) and get attention.
And I think that the most stupidiest think today wasn't mc bax... posts, but the other side - hey smart programmers, think before your post... there is no need to be programmer to come here, and the age doesn't metter so much - somebody doesn't like the iotd and flame it - ok, maybe this is stupid, but why is that desire to show how good defender of the iotd are you? (i won't even talk about 'moron' guys...).
new IOTD. have ideias, have questions, have suggestions? post them! don't like anybody post? go outside kill 10-12 people and calm down...
there is irc at least...
(no questions -> no answers!)

January 12, 2001, 12:09 PM

And just to make sure that wasn't the 99th post, maybe this is 100 or something.

Anyway, here is my post.
And to the rest of you:

okay, enough silliness.

January 12, 2001, 12:10 PM

I just want to say that this is the first time I have ever posted to this board. I look at the images all of the time, but yet I have never posted. So why now? Because MC BAXTON is the funniest SOB I have ever seen on here. Maybe he is negative, but that is his opinion to which he is entitled. But when you guys flame him, and he responds like "I don't care" or "Are you happy that you are able to not agree with me ?" I just bust a gut laughing. He is obviously flame retardent. :)

BTW, I think the image is pretty neat. I don't expect everyone here to be an expert, and it is interesting to see what things people come up with.

my 2 cents

January 12, 2001, 12:12 PM

Is there a way to edit a message when I spell retardant wrong?

January 12, 2001, 12:12 PM

Is there a way to edit a message when I spell retardant wrong?

January 12, 2001, 12:19 PM

As I was saying
To the rest of you, here is what I think of the current discussion rgarding who's right and who's wrong:

Now stop it, and IGNORE commenst which are counterproductive. I like to think this one was productive :)

January 12, 2001, 12:30 PM

come on! show us some more ! :)
i want some hardcore cactuses in your next iotd egreg, perhaps it would look good mapped on one of your now famous cylinders 8)

January 12, 2001, 12:40 PM

That does it. I will stop checking the IOTD for at least a week and see by then if things got better. I'm NOT going to wade through masses of STUPID posts, ESPECIALLY not if they are accompanied by ridiculously large uninteresting cactus dick pictures like the previous post. There's just no STYLE left here. Especially compared to most of the posts here, NONE of the IOTD's sucked. This board isn't worth the images anymore, dudes.

Wayne Marsh

January 12, 2001, 01:08 PM

PLEASE! It's just annoying now!
Can we all just agree NOT to flame idiots? The flaming is A LOT more harmful than the original snidy comments!
Just ignore the stupid people.. ..ignore.

January 12, 2001, 01:32 PM

First there were a few normal responses to the IOTD.
Then there was the MC_BAXTON response that everyone should have expected.
Then there were 10 replies to the MC_BAXTON response.
Then there was a discussion, with everyone trying to point out how wrong MC_BAXTON was, and MC_BAXTON "not caring".
Then, there was a slew of posts about how the discussion was going nowhere, and it was the discussion that was bad.
Then, there was another bunch of posts criticising what the IOTD has become.

What is the use of this? The best thing you can do is NOT POST, and come back the next day. What is the point of posting, when you're simply increasing the number of messages and they are off-topic? I think the IOTD should be cleared of the whole off-topic discussion so people can start posting again.

If you want to post, ignore everyone and post regarding the IOTD. Otherwise, it ruins the atmosphere.
That is why I posted the giant cactus.

Now, this message also adds to the posts. But, I hope it shows that further posting is simply ego-stroking... who hasn't said what you're about to say, 5 times, in different words?
Get on with your life.

And MC_BAXTON, get one, please.

PS: The term might actually be SAGGIARUS VIAGRAS ERECTUS

January 12, 2001, 01:36 PM

Howdy, Tronster "the other" programmer of this demo here....

First props to Moby Disk (aka: William Garrison) for spending the past 3 months cleaning-up, documenting, and writing examples for his GeoGL library. He didn't want to post a shot for IOTD until he had code people could look at. If anyone tries GeoGL, please send feedback. It's a very interesting library. I used it for the particle engine in the demo, and it was very easy to work with.

Second, don't feed the troll. => (I too liked it when all posts were on it goes.)

Third, about the "quality" of the demo...
This demo was made in 3 months time. It is a good example of what can be thrown together with lots of effort, and clean OO code. I'm not surprised of who came in 1st place, as the winners did a fantastic job writing their demo, spending almost a full year on getting it to perfection.

We are proud of what we accomplished, but we don't want to advertise this as being something revolutionary. It's just something fun we created in our spare time which, we hoped to entertain others with.

I thank everyone for their comments (both positive and negative) and hope that by incorporating your feedback into our next demo/game release, that we will create something of even higher quality.

January 12, 2001, 01:36 PM

This is getting tedious and very boing now guys.

Woo Hoo! 157,000th post!

January 12, 2001, 01:38 PM

Oh yeah. I actually quite like the pic. The small one in the corner is of better quality than the main image but who cares. As stated before, the only obvious problem is the blured texture of the motherboard.

January 12, 2001, 01:55 PM

nice image - assuming that the image in the corner is animated so that the light beam swipes across, how did you do it? it looks cool!

i was wondering if you could use the same idea for ion trails or something

the rest of you shut up about MC BAXTON

January 12, 2001, 01:58 PM

well i was just hoping to make egreg look less ridiculous by being ridiculous myself :p
dont misjudge him, at least he didn't wrote some bad things about the iotd...

January 12, 2001, 02:22 PM

I see here many TOTALLY NEGATIVE and totally wrong posts. Some people like phantasy and have too much impressions about what is going on. I've heard here some really silly thoughts about my person. You can imagine everything. But some from you are just completely wrong.

Your's sincerely
(with patience)

Kurt Miller

January 12, 2001, 02:34 PM

">>Kurt, ..., someone, please, please, PLEASE, - P L E A S E - do something. Filter, kick, ban, KILL :), anything. "

Its not so simple. Though I'm bothered by the conversations that take place thanks to certain people, those people generally aren't breaking any "rules". If I remove someone's account, that sort of implies that I'm prepared to start removing anyone's account when they say things like "this sux." I'm not.

The easy (and tempting) solution, considering the fact that many people are e-mailing saying they're very close to not visiting this site any longer because of the trash that's taking over -- is to just remove the "of the day" comment forums again. I've not yet decided however. I'll probably post in 'random bits' about this later on when I have more time...
