Image Description, by Robin Håkanson

Here are som screenshots from my TI-82 demo IMATION released during Dreamhack00. It has som nice parts, faked grayscale (LCD screen's has low refresh rate ;) ), tunnels and other stuff that you normaly find in standard PC demos. For all you pepople out there that have you own TI-82 calculator you can download the demo from www.algonet.se/~skede/flum.82p. You will need CRash to run it (if you don't already have it you can find it somewhere on www.ticalc.org). There is also an MPG version of the demo for all you poor fellows that don't have an as kicking TI-82 calculator, it's lokated on ftp://ftp.dreamhack.org/pub/dh00/compos/Oldskool/Imation.mpg. If anyone is intrested in coding TI-82 and Z80 processors i have wrote some artikels about it on www.planetzeus.net (it's pretty good if you know swedish because the artikels seamse to be written in that wierd language ;) ). /Robin Håkanson

I agree, I think using low-spec machines makes people better coders.

Trying to learn from the Quake source can't have been easy - John Carmack isn't well-known for readable code.

I'm sure that there must be some good books covering BSPs and the likes, but I learnt most of my modern coding from the internet. To be honest I think I prefer books.

Yes, the kids with GeForces thing is going nowhere. And it makes me jealous - my machine that I code on is quite slow compared to PCs that most programmers use! :-)

I'll upgrade that TNT some day. I've been saying that for a long time!

Anyway, thank you for the reply, and good luck with your coding!

- Peter

Someone got too much sparetime! ;-)
Yesterday I saw a show on television, where a guy swallowed a lightbulb and you could see it glow through his stomach. What on earth made him ever try that? That is beyond my imagination!
I get the same feeling when I look at this TI-82 demo!!! ;-)) An amazing piece of code! Keep up the good work!

Lots of swedes here recently, so here comes a christmas greeting...God Jul och Gott Nytt År... o

Most impressive. A friend of mine programs games on his calculator, but nothing as cool as this.

I think it is even more impressive to be able to code on something small like a calculator then a full decked-out multi-Ghz geforce machine.

It kinda makes you the "MacGuyver of coders", being able to have fun with whatever you're given.

(To those who might not know, MacGuyver was a fictional character from a late '80s, early '90s TV show. He had the ability to pretty much create anything usefull with whatever resources were available to him)

I took the screenshoots using the Virtual TI emulator. It tries to emulate the LCD screen (it don't look as good as on the real calculator but...) And yes it uses Crash...

I just want to make some things clear before everyone things that it's TO impressive. The TI-82 caclulator is pretty fast.. it has a 6mhz Z80. And this demo would most likley not have been possiblie to arhive if not Hideaki Omuro and Jeff Mears had written Crash.

By the way... If anyone is intrested i have written an game for the TI-82 calculator to. It was before i made this demo, so it don't look this good (i diden't have someone to draw pictures for me ither so it looks like.....). It's the traditional "build pipes so oil can flow trogh them game". It's lokated at http://www.ticalc.org/pub/82/asm/games/crash/pipe2.zip.

And i would also like to say "God Jul på er".

I noticed that someone asked something about this party. No it aint a TI-82 competion, it's a standard demo party lokated in Borlänge sweden. But i relly don't want to make the party sound good. Both this year and the last year they diden't gave away the prizes they prommised in the demo compos and everything there works pretty bad (expect for the compo crew, they where great).

Great demo! Brings me back to the old days of passing away boring hours of classtime with my TI-85... wait, that was yesterday! (lousy finals... =) )

You've got to really respect the dedication of programmers on old systems like that, able to take almost no resources and make something really shine.

i have never heard of TI-82's before, but i am still amazed that anyone could (be bothered to) do that on a calculator. And besides, if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything.

yo gods!

erhmz..I feel humble in front of you and bow, or, in dutch:
dus genoeg van die ongein, anders komen we je halen, ok?
sorry,..I always feel that urge when someone speaks another language in an english place,....
But besides English, Swedish and Finish (???) are the most relevant here, so I won't blame you, and yes, I like the sound of it, and no, I'm not trying to dis you :)

"And I think that every coder must pass through the test of the slow machine with almost no memory, no HDD and a monohrome monitor - and after all that to love it! I do."
I would go for 256colors, and 20mb HDD, but you have a point

Midvinternattens köld är hård
Tio små nissar i djupsnö går
Rävsax gömd under skynke vitt
Knipsar nisse av på mitt
Livsandar snabbt för honom tryter
Snart i sitt eget blod han flyter

Nio små tomtar i midnattstimma
Traskar fram i månljusstrimma
Ugglan hoarfrån sitt näste
Istapp faller tyst från fäste
Nisse spetsav utav tappen

Men sjunker likväl i kvicksandslik gröt
Många springor stugan har

God jul alla Nissar!!!

Där sju små tomtar in sig tar
Katten som bak dörren lura
Slukar nisse med hull och luva
Resterna av tomtehand
Suger Misse bort från tand

Sex små nissar mot julbord ila
Snabbt de uppför bordsben kila
När sista tomten över kanten hasa
Han tappar greppet, och nedåt rasa
Faller nedåt likt ett lod
Mattan röd av Tomteblod

Tomtar fem i väldig iver
Springer runt, ty hungern river
Nisse snubblar på sitt skägg
Faller rätt på knivens egg
Lille Nisse, stackars saten
Rinner ut i sillsallaten

Ner faller nisse i glögghett hav
Likt skållad mandel hans skinn faller av

Tre små tomtar i granen svingar

Husbonn stiger upp i natten
För att kasta lite vatten
Under husbonns tunga toffla

Moh massa. :)

OK, this is my contribution to the Joke Of The Day: foreign languages. :)

When the last Kalender-sheets
flattern trough the winterstreets
and Dezemberwind is blowing,
then ist everybody knowing
that it is not allzuweit:
she does come - the Weihnachtszeit.

All the Menschen, Leute, people
flippen out of ihr warm Stueble,
run to Kaufhof, Aldi, Mess,
make Konsum and business.
Kaufen this und jene things
and the Churchturmglocke rings.

Manche holen sich a Taennchen,
when this brennt, they cry "Attention".
Rufen for the Feuerwehr:
"Please come quick to loeschen her!"
Goes the Taennchen of in Rauch,
they are standing on the Schlauch.

In the kitchen of the house
mother makes the Christmasschmaus.
She is working, schufts and bakes
the hit is now her Yoghurtkeks.
And the Opa says als Tester:
"We are killed bis to Silvester".
Then he fills the last Glas wine -
yes, this is the christmastime!

Day by day does so vergang,
and the Holy night does come.
You can think, you can remember,
this is immer in Dezember.

Then the childrenlein are coming
candle-Wachs is abwaerts running.
Bing of Crosby Christmas sings
while the Towerglocke rings
and the angels look so fine -
well this is the Weihnachtstime.

Baby-eyes are big and rund,
the familiy feels kerngesund
when unterm Weihnachtsbaum they
are hocking
then nothing can them ever shocking.
They are so happy, are so fine -
this happens in the Chistmastime!

The animals all in the house,
the Hund, the Katz, the bird, the mouse,
are turning round the Weihnachtsstress,
enjoy this day as never nie,
well they find Kittekat and Chappi
in the geschenkkarton von Pappi.

The familiy begins to sing
and wieder does a Gloeckchen ring.
Zum song vom gruenen Tannenbaum
the Traenen rennen down and down.
Bis our mother ploetzlich flennt:
"The christmas-Gans im Ofen brennt!"
Her nose indeed is very fine.
End of the Weihnachtstime

Merry Weihnachten all together ;))

Tolva nissar......
100 nissar satt på en massa kvastar
och det tyckte dom var så intressant
så dom gick och sprängde hela verkstaden
och inga julklappar kom
bara en massa kvastar

OJ! Den var bra!!
(C) FÖR HELA BUNTEN!!

The point is not that greyscales are old and suck, the point is that this is the best thing you can get out of this calculator.

With all due respect, I don't give you much chances to do any better. This stuff is real art for hardcore programmers, not for softies that can make better looking things with a lot of stolen code...

Regards,

Nick

WOW, WHAT A SHOT! In one day, it even got poems in German pasted for it! And as far as I can tell they aren't even about game programming!! :-)

That is for sure the best thing I've seen FOR A CALCULATOR. OKAAAAY? ;-)

Relax.

really nice shot!!! i really like when someone does something great for a calculator or for a palm pc, it's just great.

My addition to the foreign laguages competition:

Que fastidio tener que soportar 57 mensajes, y que la mayoria de ellos sean poemas en aleman. Yo creía que nadie se atrevería a escribir en otro lenguaje distinto al ingles aqui, pero que se hace!!.......

Spanish, for those who don't know............

Ok, I think it's my turn I think whuahaha

Flipcode goes international ;)
