Image Description, by Phil Carlisle

This is for use by my little home/test project (freedom - www.nukeplanet.com/freedom (note: nutscrape doesnt like the site, and ie is a bit unhappy too :))

The toolbar at the top holds the editing tools for the particualar view.

The view is the set of tab pages on the right, there is a greyscale heightmap editor, and landscape preview (using opengl, this is a semi wysiwyg view), when the user selects an object in the objects panel on the left (the set of tab pages containing "objects" which are placable on the landscape) the Object properties page contains details and/or editable attributes.

Finally the Instance properties panel edits properties for a specific instance of a placed object (so for instance, i place a panda on the landscape, I can switch to the instance pane and change its name, scripts, etc etc..).

All in all, not bad for a few hours work (less than an hour creating the app as it is.. ).

I'll send an update when the preview is more spetacular :))

Phil.

I like the screenshots on your site, they look very impressive. It's nice to see people start focusing more and more on the content editing and management tools. You mention scripts attached to the objects - what kind of scripting engine do you use?
Keep up the good work!

Looks nice and useful.

Although it's irrelevant to the editor itself, are you actually rendering it (or planning) with quadtree or octree?

malkia: Its not completed yet. Once I get more functionality in, I'll probably open source it (its just a tool after all).

It might be too tailored to my own needs by then though.

Vandar: Quadtree, I had it using the roam algo, but that is going out and patch based discreet LOD is coming in. I use a system similar to B&W for the texture blending (you cant see anything in those shots that will show it, but I got to the stage where I know what I wanted to do and started a re-write).

Chaos: Having seen that they used Java in vampire, we used that, but the scripting system is going to change soon to be server based (our server is written in java, so its not much of a change), the scripts will be run by a "NPC processor" which runs the AI for all NPC's as a process, and hands the info off to the world server.

Thanks for the comments though guys. Wasnt really intending to send anything, but Kurt was running out of IOTD's and I was just happily playing with my little app :))
