Here is a link to source for the 'Floyd-Steinberg' dithering algorithm.

Other algorithms that use the same method, but differing filters are:

Stucki
Burkes
Sierra
Jarvis, Judice, and Ninke
Stevenson and Arce

Of this style of dithering, the Floyd-Steinberg should be the fastest since it has a very simple filter.
